Sea Isle City 5/12 Nor’easter Message from the Business Administrator

Posted: 14 May 2008 07:17 PM CDT

May 12, 2008 Nor’easter;

City forces are in the process of performing clean up operations as well as damage assessment. The geo-tubes are completely exposed on the ocean side, and the beaches suffered moderate to severe erosion along the length of the island. We had two wastewater pump stations without power, but they are now operational, and it appears there was no damage to the equipment or discharge of sewage. Our short term objective relative to this storm event is to ensure the town is cleaned up, and the beaches prepared for the Memorial Day weekend. Toward that end, Public Works crews will be working extended hours throughout the weekend and next week. As we obtain information from emergency management personnel at the county, we will keep you apprised of the status of any disaster declaration. As we respond to the immediate needs, we will also develop a plan of action for longer term measures relative to this event, most of which obviously revolve around the condition of our beaches. We also suffered some minor facility damage, most noticeably to several roofs.

Spring Nor’easter!

May 12, 2008

Birds are chirping and flying again but what a storm!  Wind gusts were clocked at 78 miles per hour in Ocean City and Sea Isle City.  The storm started around 10 pm last night and did not break until around 3 pm this afternoon.  Our island took a beating with flooding and wind damage.  The bridge to Avalon was closed and the only route out this morning was driving the wrong way up Pleasure Avenue and the wrong side of JFK out over the bridge.  The middle of town lost all power but Townsend’s Inlet remained on all day.  High tide brought bay water higher than I have ever witnessed too date down here and can not comment on the ocean as I only ventured outside this afternoon to retrieve garbage cans blown into the bay and to find a gas grill cover that was missing in action.  The winds and rain/sleet? continued for about 16 hours to make it the nastiest storm thus far for me on this island because it lasted so long.  All is pretty calm around 7 pm, and everyone will begin to clean up tomorrow.
